Pixel Ads--A Profitable New Way To Get Traffic To Your Website

There's a brand new and very precocious baby in the internet marketing world and its name is Pixel Advertising. Here's a brief announcement of its birth and some of its amazingly rapid development during its first six months on the scene.

In the late fall of 2005, Alex Tew, a brilliant young computer wizard and entrepreneur from England, was looking for a way to finance his college education. Setting his sights high, he brainstormed how he could earn a million dollars in one year.

Of the ideas he came up with, the one he decided to implement was outrageously outside the box. It consisted in selling pixels--the little pinpoints of light on his computer screen--for a dollar a piece!

To implement this brazen idea, he set up a webpage, divided it into 10,000 blocks of 100 pixels each, and created a computer program to link one or more of these blocks to a particular website. He also set it up so that an image or icon could be placed on each block or set of blocks; further, whenever someone moved a cursor over the icon, a small pop-up box would appear with a brief description of the website being advertised. Then, by simply clicking on this micro-ad, as Alex called it, the viewer could access the website that was linked to it.

He started selling these 100-pixel blocks for $100 each, guaranteeing that the ad would continue to be active for five years. Advertisers could buy multiple blocks if they wished and group them together to form a larger ad. After selling a few of these pixel ads to his family members and friends, he got some local media attention. Then, mainly through word of mouth, this novel new form of advertising suddenly swept over the internet like a tidal wave.

During the next three months, Alex sold all 10,000 of the 100-pixel blocks on his webpage and achieved his ambitious goal of making a million dollars. You can see the novel visual display of these micro-ads on his webpage by going to http://www.MillionDollarHomePage.com.

Along with his spectacular financial success, Alex has also become something of a celebrity. He has had numerous appearances on most of the major TV networks in England and the U.S and has also been the subject of a great many articles, including one in the Wall Street Journal.

Most importantly, as a result of his clever invention, the world of internet advertising has been transformed with lightning speed. There are now literally thousands of pixel advertising websites that are slightly modified clones of the original prototype; and entering the term, pixel advertising, into a search engine now yields well over 5 million hits. Clearly, Alex has inspired a large cadre of like-minded entrepreneurs who have taken his idea and run with it in many different directions.

One particularly impressive example of this followed very quickly in the wake of his invention. At the end of November, 2005, a highly successful network marketing leader, Russ Medlin, received a copy of the Wall Street Journal article about Alex Tew. Immediately after reading it, he realized that by combining pixel advertising with an income opportunity, hundreds of thousands of advertisers could share in this new advertising bonanza. So, in less than a week, he and two business associates created just such a hybrid.

Even during its ten-week pre-launch period, this new company enjoyed unprecedented success by enrolling over 11,000 members and becoming the largest pixel-advertising website in the world. Also, during this period, it received more internet traffic than any other network marketing website on the internet. During the last month alone, it has had over 200,000 unique visitors. It has now grown to over 15,000 members from over 50 different countries and its current three-month average internet traffic ranking at www.alexa.com is an amazing 6,471.It offers 100-pixel ads at the bargain rate of $25. In its first payout, over $900,000 were disbursed to nearly 5,000 of the initial advertisers.

There are many other pixel advertising websites that are selling ads dirt cheap--some for as little as a penny a pixel. Before buying these bargain-basement ads--or any other pixel ad, for that matter--it's crucially important to estimate the return on investment (ROI) by determining the projected number of visitors per day who are likely to see the ad.

One of the better ways to do this is to go to www.alexa.com and enter the name of the website you wish to evaluate in the search box. You can then get measures of the daily unique pageviews for that website and compare this measure with that of other websites. These measures may not be particularly accurate, however, for websites that have fewer than 1,000 monthly visitors.

As with all new precocious infants, it's impossible to predict with any degree of precision what the future will hold for Pixel Advertising. As it matures, however, it will undoubtedly continue to have a major impact on the ongoing evolution of web-based marketing.
